About Kayla

How Kayla teaches

Hello! I'm Kayla and I offer 1:1 online Clarinet lessons from Grades 1-5.

I am a current Music student at the University of Southampton. Alongside this, I am a classically trained clarinettist with 15 years of experience. I also have a comprehensive ABRSM music theory knowledge (Grades 1–5) and regularly compose - particularly meditation styled music and film-based compositions. I hold a DBS Certificate and attained a distinction in both my ABRSM Grade 8 clarinet exam and Grade 5 theory exam. I also attained an A* for Music at IGCSE and have been awarded with various music awards. Most importantly, music has always been a central part of my life and I am passionate to share the joy I have for it with others!

I have taught at 2 schools over the past 4 years as a Music Assistant, both at Windlesham House School and Hellenic academy back home in Zimbabwe. In both settings - I assisted in the classroom, took 1:1 woodwind lessons, conducted in various bands/ensembles, and tutored extra theory lessons. Having taught in both primary and secondary education settings I have been lucky enough to have worked with all ages (5-18).

I believe that music lessons should be uplifting, motivating, and tailored to the individual. My goal for every student is for them to leave each session feeling assured in their own abilities, inspired, and supported in their musical journey. I take an individualised approach to teaching-listening closely to the needs of each student on the day. There will always be positivity, patience and warmth in our lessons (with plenty of humour, of course!).

What a typical lesson looks like:

We will work through the book at a pace that is comfortable for you but also at a pace that will push you. As someone who asks a lot of questions are highly encouraged! So please ask away. I will then set small tasks/ homework to complete to hit our goals which we can discuss througout our lessons. You will need to have an ABRSM music theory workbook/ clarinet book of the relevant grade.
